5 Top Tips for Job Seekers in New Zealand
Tip No 1. Stay organised and have a strategy
Jobs won’t come to you. Being clear and having a strategy will help ensure that getting that perfect job whether it be, part time, full time or temporary, becomes much easier. Take notes, make a plan and stick to it. Plans could involve performing doable daily tasks such as contacting your recruitment agent for updates, talking with people about what you are looking for and ask them to keep their ears open, looking and applying for jobs and most of all finding a professional recruitment agency that is willing to help you. Our team of recruitment specialists are always willing to listen and quite often they may have something in the pipeline that suits your job skills. Its always a good idea to talk with us first. Tip No 2. Know your strengths (and your weaknesses)
Everybody has areas they thrive in or skills that set them apart from the other candidates. The trick is to really know what your good at and sell yourself. A job interview is similar to a sales pitch and confidence in yourself and what you can offer is key for this process. Write down things about you that you know you are good at or even better have a chat with someone who really knows you well and get their opinions also. They may recognise strengths you didn’t know you had as well as build your self confidence.
Tip No 3. Have an up to date resume
Recruitment agencies will be more enthusiastic about finding you a job if you have an up to date CV or resume. Its up to you to make sure you present yourself well in this medium and make a positive impression on prospective employers, so keep it relevant and keep it up to date. If you spent 6 years as a warehouse worker and your applying for a job in IT or Web development, don’t focus on the skills that are not relevant to the career you are shifting into. Don’t leave out your work history, but be clear about the job you are going for and tailor your CV to suit.
Tip No 4. Be flexible
Are you willing to move? There are areas in New Zealand that have different worker shortages. We have offices in most major centres: Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington, Christchurch and Invercargill. We may be able to assist you in the transition to your perfect job in a new and exciting city. Just let us know if you are open to change.
Tip No 5. Networking is an invaluable pursuit
There is some truth in the phrase ‘95% of jobs aren’t advertised’ and recruitment companies are constantly looking for new talent online. Therefore maintaining a strong and carefully managed online presence through LinkedIn and perhaps other forms of social media is a great way to get yourself noticed and perhaps in the mix for jobs that you otherwise wouldn’t find out about. Conversely an office worker whose only online presence is boozy weekend pictures on facebook may harm their job prospects. You will be researched online and you can use this to your advantage if you are savvy.
Recently we interviewed candidates that had immigrated to New Zealand. We asked them what tips they would give to other people who were in the same position. Interestingly a large percentage of them said that showing confidence at the interview was the main thing they focused on. Not having English as a first language meant the candidate felt he/she was at a disadvantage however showing confidence in themselves and their ability impressed their employers enough to offer them the role.
The candidates were seeking IT jobs in Auckland as it turned out and Enterprise have a IT recruitment division focused on helping employers get the right people.
