About the Role:
You will carry out MIG welding and associated fabrication tasks to deliver components and structures that meet strict quality and safety standards.
Working from blueprints and technical drawings, you will ensure accurate interpretation and execution, contributing to efficient project delivery and minimal rework.
Key Responsibilities:
* Perform MIG welding on a variety of metals in accordance with job specifications and workshop procedures.
* Interpret blueprints and technical drawings to determine welding sequences, dimensions, and fabrication requirements.
* Carry out metal preparation, cutting, and fitting to ensure correct alignment and joint configuration before welding.
* Use welding and workshop tools, including grinders, clamps, and measuring equipment, to support fabrication and finishing.
* Inspect welds for defects, identify root causes, and carry out repairs to restore structural integrity and appearance.
* Conduct weld quality checks and basic non-destructive testing as required to verify compliance with standards.
* Maintain a clean, organised work area and handle equipment in line with workshop safety protocols.
* Collaborate with supervisors and team members to meet production targets and adjust work plans as jobs progress.
Key Requirements:
* Proven experience in MIG welding in a fabrication or workshop environment.
* Strong ability to read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and welding symbols.
* Practical experience in metal fabrication, cutting, and fitting for welded assemblies.
* Solid understanding of welding safety standards and safe workshop practices.
* Competence in identifying common weld defects and carrying out effective repair techniques.
* Familiarity with basic weld inspection methods and quality control procedures.
* Reliable, detail-focused approach with the ability to work to set timeframes on a fixed-term basis.
Desirable Skills:
* Exposure to working with different materials and metallurgical properties in welding applications.
* Experience with basic non-destructive testing methods for weld quality assessment.
* Ability to suggest improvements in fabrication processes to reduce defects and rework.
* Previous experience in a similar role within a production or engineering workshop in New Zealand.
Qualifications:
* Trade qualification or certificate in welding, fabrication, or a related discipline is preferred.
* Recognised MIG welding tickets or certifications are advantageous.
* Relevant health and safety training (e.g. workshop safety, hazard management) is beneficial.
