About the Role:
You will be responsible for drain laying, pipe installation, and operating excavators and dump trucks to support civil construction works to New Zealand standards.

Working as part of a site crew, you will help ensure projects are completed safely, efficiently, and to specification.

Your contribution will directly impact project timelines, site safety, and the long-term reliability of underground services.

Key Responsibilities:
* Operate excavators safely and efficiently for trenching, backfilling, and general earthworks.
* Operate dump trucks and tipping equipment to transport and place materials on site.
* Install drains and pipes in accordance with New Zealand standards and project specifications.
* Read and interpret civil construction plans and drawings to guide excavation and installation work.
* Assess soil conditions, trench stability, and ground support needs to maintain safe work areas.
* Set up and use laser levels and basic surveying equipment to achieve correct line and grade.
* Carry out routine machinery checks, basic maintenance, and report faults or defects promptly.
* Work closely with site supervisors and crew members to coordinate tasks and maintain safe, efficient workflows.
* Follow traffic management directions and maintain awareness of vehicle and pedestrian movements on site.

Key Requirements:
* Proven experience operating excavators and heavy machinery on civil construction or similar projects.
* Demonstrated experience operating dump trucks and tipping equipment in a site environment.
* Solid understanding of New Zealand health and safety regulations relevant to civil construction.
* Practical drain laying and pipe installation experience to NZ standards.
* Ability to accurately read and interpret civil plans, drawings, and site instructions.
* Competence in assessing trench and ground stability and working safely in excavations.
* Experience using laser levels and basic surveying tools for setting out.
* Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively within a site crew.
* Reliable, safety-focused work ethic with the ability to follow procedures and instructions.

Desirable Skills:
* Experience working on urban infrastructure or subdivision projects.
* Exposure to traffic management setups and working around live roads.
* Familiarity with a range of attachments and configurations for excavators.
* Basic understanding of quality assurance processes for pipework and drainage.
* Ability to assist with general labouring tasks when required to support the crew.

Qualifications:
* Relevant trade or industry training in civil construction, drain laying, or heavy machinery operation.
* NZQA or equivalent unit standards in excavator and dump truck operation (preferred).
* Full New Zealand driver’s licence; Class 2/4 or higher licence (preferred) and RTW.
* Current Site Safe passport or equivalent health and safety training (preferred).
* Any drain laying certifications or registrations (advantageous but not essential for all roles).
