About the Role:
You will be responsible for safely carrying out and supporting confined space entry operations, ensuring all work is completed in line with New Zealand health and safety regulations and site procedures.
Working closely with supervisors and other team members, you will help plan, execute, and monitor tasks in hazardous environments, including acting as a key point of control for permits, isolation, and emergency readiness.
Your actions will directly minimise risk and ensure safe outcomes for all personnel involved.
Key Responsibilities:
* Conduct and support confined space entries in accordance with site procedures and NZ regulatory requirements
* Perform hazard identification and risk assessments before and during confined space work
* Implement and monitor permit to work and isolation procedures for confined space activities
* Set up, inspect, and use personal protective equipment (PPE), breathing apparatus, and respiratory protection correctly
* Act as a standby person/attendant for confined space entries, maintaining continuous communication with entrants
* Participate in and, where required, assist with confined space rescue procedures and emergency response drills
* Monitor atmospheric conditions and other risk factors, escalating issues and stopping work when unsafe conditions arise
* Work collaboratively with supervisors, contractors, and team members to ensure safe coordination of tasks in hazardous environments
Key Requirements:
* Proven experience working in confined spaces within industrial or construction environments
* Demonstrated competence in confined space entry and rescue procedures
* Strong practical understanding of hazard identification and risk assessment in hazardous work areas
* Hands-on experience with permit to work and isolation procedures
* Confident and competent use of PPE, including breathing apparatus and respiratory protection
* Solid knowledge of relevant New Zealand health and safety regulations and standards
* Ability to communicate clearly and work effectively as part of a team under pressure
* Physically fit and able to work in confined, potentially challenging environments
Desirable Skills:
* Previous experience as a confined space standby person or rescue team member
* Experience in high-risk industrial sites such as utilities, manufacturing, or infrastructure maintenance
* Familiarity with gas detection equipment and atmospheric monitoring systems
* Ability to contribute to toolbox talks and safety briefings
Qualifications:
* Current Confined Space Entry certification (NZ-recognised)
* Current First Aid certificate, including CPR (preferably with advanced or workplace first aid)
* Certification or formal training in the use of breathing apparatus/respiratory protection
* Health and Safety training or unit standards relevant to hazardous work environments (preferred)
